Auntie thinks it's not cool to speak mandarin
I brought my watch for servicing today. The service centre is only open on weekdays, 9-5.
When I reached, I was made to fill in my particulars, name, i/c no, address, etc. In one of the section, I was asked to select - Language spoken. There were only two boxes – English and the other, Mandarin. They did not indicate the word ‘preferred’ and since I am bilingual, I ticked both boxes.
I was then asked to take a seat while they checked my watch. After checking, a lady shouted my name. She was very loud … and very clear. I was pleasantly surprised that she could pronounce my surname correctly.
I went up to her … she lady started speaking to me in mandarin. In her ‘young-lady-you-listen-carefully’ tone, she went on to explain very loudly and clearly that their watches may require servicing every 3 years. Since I did not service my watch for the past 5 years, a lot of parts are probably faulty and need to be replaced. When I asked her if Alice can collect the watch on my behalf, she kinda forced a smile and said ‘我们是认单,而不认人的hor’. What she meant is that the bearer of the collection slip can collect the watch, no verification will be required.
==================Dear Auntie,
What didn't you serve me the same way you served others? Is it because I chose mandarin as my spoken language? Is it because you don’t like to serve mandarin-speaking customers? We had a 华语 COOL campaign and the campaign was very successful. So you think it’s not so cool to speak mandarin, huh?
Auntie, I hope you serve all your customers equally.
It’s for your own good.
